COIDA Benefits and Compensation: What You Are Entitled To
COIDA provides comprehensive financial protection for workers injured on the job. Understanding your entitlements ensures you receive the full compensation you deserve.
Types of COIDA Benefits
1. Medical Benefits
COIDA covers all reasonable medical expenses related to the occupational injury or disease. This includes hospitalization, surgery, medication, physiotherapy, and specialist consultations. There is no monetary cap on medical benefits.
2. Temporary Disability Benefits
If an employee cannot work due to an injury, they receive 75% of their earnings up to a maximum amount set annually by the Minister of Labour. Payments continue until the worker recovers or the condition stabilizes.
3. Permanent Disability Benefits
For permanent impairments, COIDA pays a lump sum or monthly pension depending on the disability percentage. Disabilities over 30% qualify for a lifelong pension. Disabilities under 30% receive a lump sum.
4. Death Benefits
If a worker dies from an occupational injury, dependents receive:
- Spouse pension: 40% of employee’s earnings (up to maximum)
- Child pension: 20% per child (up to 2 children)
- Funeral expenses: Lump sum up to the prescribed limit
2024 COIDA Compensation Maximums
The maximum earnings ceiling for COIDA compensation is reviewed annually. Employers should verify current rates on the Department of Labour website to ensure accurate calculations.
