COIDA for Domestic Employers: Maids, Gardeners, and Nannies
Many South African households do not realize that employing a maid, gardener, nanny, or driver triggers COIDA obligations. Domestic employers must register and pay reduced assessment tariffs.
Who Qualifies as a Domestic Employer?
Any private household employing one or more domestic workers falls under COIDA. This includes:
- Housekeepers and maids
- Gardeners and pool maintenance staff
- Nannies and childminders
- Private drivers and security guards employed by the household
COIDA Registration for Domestic Employers
The registration process is similar to commercial employers but uses a separate tariff class. You will need:
- Your South African ID
- Proof of residential address
- Employee ID copies and employment details
- Estimated annual wage bill
Domestic Employer Assessment Tariff
Domestic employers pay a flat, reduced tariff compared to commercial businesses. This makes compliance affordable while ensuring your staff are protected if injured at work.
What Happens If a Domestic Worker Is Injured?
Report the accident within 7 days using Form WCL 2. The worker receives medical treatment and, if unable to work, temporary disability benefits. As the employer, you cannot be sued personally if you are COIDA-registered.
COIDA Protects Employers Too
Registration gives you legal immunity from civil claims by domestic workers for workplace injuries. Without COIDA registration, you face unlimited personal liability.
